After posting my Easy Knit Mittens Pattern last month, I received so many messages requesting a simple crochet mitten pattern.  Of course, I could not disappoint you guys, so I got right to it!  I actually spent a long time coming up with this pattern because I wanted it to be really simple and easy to follow -but every yarn that I tried just didn’t look right.  And then I discovered Plymouth Yarns Baby Alpaca Brush.  This yarn is soft, fluffy and luxuriously warm.  The plush texture made my simple half double crochet stitch mittens look amazing and kept my hands toasty warm!

Fuzzy Warm Crochet Mittens Pattern

Materials:

Here is what you will need to make two mittens:

Size:

These stretchy mittens are perfect for medium-sized women’s hands, although you may customize the length for smaller or larger hands.

Abbreviations:

CH: Chain

DC: Double Crochet

HDC: Half Double Crochet

FPDC: Front Post Double Crochet

HDC2Tog: Half Double Crochet Two Together

Notes:

  • Work your rounds in spirals – do not join at the beginning of each round. You will need to use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.
  • Each round has the total number of stitches for the round in brackets. If you are unsure it’s always a good idea to count your stitches.
  • Both mittens follow the same pattern since they are the same in the back and front.

Pattern:

Body of Mitten:

These mittens are crocheted from the top down.  To start, make a magic ring.

Round 1:  Work 7 HDC in magic ring (7 St).

Round 2:  HDC twice in each hdc (14 St).

Round 3: *2HDC in next hdc, 1HDC in next hdc.  Repeat from * until end of round (21 St).

Round 4: *2HDC in next hdc, 1HDC in next two hdc.  Repeat from * until end of round (28 St).

Rounds 5-13: HDC in each hdc (28 St).

Note: you can work more or less rounds here for larger or smaller hands.

Round 14: CH8, skip four hdc; 1HDC in each remaining hdc (32 St).

Note: This creates the thumb hole.

Round 15: HDC in each stitch (either chain or hdc) (32 St).

Round 16: *HDC2Tog, HDC in next 2 hdc.  Repeat from * to end of round (24 St).

Round 17: *HDC2Tog, HDC in next 2 hdc.  Repeat from * to end of round (18 St).

We now start creating the cuff of the mitten.

Round 18: DC in each hdc (18 St).

Round 19: FPDC around each dc (18 St).

Round 20-23: FPDC around each fpdc (18 St).

Fasten off yarn and continue to Thumb.

Thumb:

Round 1: Attach yarn into any space around the thumb hole that was created in round 14 (make a slip knot and pull it through the stitch with hook).  CH 2 and work 16 HDC evenly around the hole (16 St).

Round 2: HDC in each hdc (16 St).

Round 3: *HDC2Tog, HDC in next 2 hdc.  Repeat from * to end of round (12 St).

Round 4-7: HDC in each hdc (12 St).

Round 8: *HDC2Tog.  Repeat from * to end of round (6 St).

Fasten off and sew up the top of the thumb.

Flip mitten inside out and weave in all loose ends on the inside of the mitten with yarn needle.
