I’ve noticed a shortage of crochet cowl patterns for men.  I’m not sure why, but I would think that men and boys also need to keep their necks warm in the winter time!  That is why I came up with my own free cowl pattern with a stitch that I think is pretty manly.  I hope you thinks so too!

The best part is that you can whip one of these up in a couple of hours.  So get out your bulky yarn and get started on this fun pattern for the manly men in your life.

I have written out and posted the free pattern for this cowl below on this page.  However, you can also purchase the PDF file for easy printing and reading (and to support me to be able to continue to post patterns on this blog).  If you’d like to purchase the PDF file, click the “Purchase PDF File” button below.

Manly Cowl Crochet Pattern 1

Free Manly Cowl Crochet Pattern

What you will need:

Here is what you will need to make this fun, quick and most of all manly cowl:

  • A size K (6.5 mm) crochet hook
  • Bulky weight yarn in the colour of your choice.  I used James C Brett Chunky with Merino (100g or 3.5 Oz per skein) in 09 (light grey colour).  The child size requires less than 1 skein and the adult size requires 1 and a half skeins.
  • Stitch Marker
  • Scissors

Sizes:

Child(Adult).

Abbreviations:

CH: Chain

SL ST: Slip Stitch

HDC: Half Double Crochet

This pattern is worked in the round.  CH 70(80) and join with SL ST to form a loop  (being careful not to twist the chain).

Round 1:  CH 2 and work one HDC in each chain (including the first one) all the way around. Count to make sure that you have 70(80) HDC at the end of the round.  Join to first HDC with SL ST.

Round 2:  CH 2, 1 HDC in same stitch, *1 SL ST in next hdc, 1 HDC in next hdc; repeat from * to end of round ending with 1 SL ST in last hdc.  Join to first HDC with SL ST.

Round 3:  Do not chain (place a stitch marker here since it will be difficult to see the end of this round).  1 HDC in next stitch (first sl st from previous round), *1 SL ST in next hdc, 1 HDC in next sl st; repeat from * ending in 1 HDC in last sl st.  Join to first sl st of round with SL ST.

Round 4:  CH 2, 1 HDC in same stitch, *1 SL ST in next hdc, 1 HDC in next sl st; repeat from * to end of round ending with 1 SL ST in last hdc.  Join to first HDC with SL ST.

Repeat rounds 3 and 4 until the cowl measures 4.5(6) inches.

Last Round:  CH 2 and work one HDC in each stitch (including the first one) all the way around. Count to make sure that you have 70(80) HDC at the end of the round.  Join to first HDC with SL ST and fasten off.

Weave in loose ends.
