The pattern comes in a variety of sizes as well in case you are looking for a baby gift or even something to make for yourself.
Free Soft and Easy Beginner Knit Hat Pattern
This pattern makes an adorable soft and cozy hat that is perfect for all ages. It requires basic knitting knowledge and is written for the following sizes:
- Baby – 6 to 12 Months
- 6mm straight knitting needles
- Worsted weight yarn. I used Reverie worsted weight yarn in Lavender from KnitPicks
- Yarn Needle
4.5-5 stitches = 1 inch in stockinette stitch
Cast on 64(72, 80,84) Stitches.
Rows 1-5: Knit 2, Purl 2 (repeat until end of row) to make 2 X 2 rib stitch
Row 5: Knit all the way across
Row 6: Purl all the way across
Repeat rows 5 and 6 (stockinette stitch) until work measures 5.5(6, 6.5, 7) inches ending in a purl row.
Cast off work: Knit two, slip first stitch over second. Repeat until the last stitch is on the hook. Cut wool and pull through the last stitch.
Fold hat in half and sew up side and top seam of the hat. Here is a good tutorial on how to sew seams in stockinette stitch: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring04/mattress.html
To make the ears, weave a strand of yarn around each top corner of the hat and secure with a bow (see photo below).
