Soft Beginner Knit Hat Pattern

This free knit hat pattern is a really fun beginner project for those of you who are new to knitting.  Its also great if you have been knitting for years!   Simple to make (no knitting in the round!), yet so cute and cozy.  I made this knitted hat for my daughter and she pretty much wears it all the time – sometimes even in the house!  If you are looking for for a simple, quick knitting pattern for a weekend project you will love this pattern.  The pattern comes in a variety of sizes as well in case you are looking for a baby gift or even something to make for yourself.

Free Soft and Easy Beginner Knit Hat Pattern

This pattern makes an adorable soft and cozy hat that is perfect for all ages. It requires basic knitting knowledge and is written for the following sizes:

  • Baby – 6 to 12 Months
  • Toddler
  • Child
  • Adult

Free Beginner Knit Hat Pattern

Materials required:

Online Knitting Class


4.5-5 stitches = 1 inch in stockinette stitch


Cast on 64(72, 80,84) Stitches.

Rows 1-5: Knit 2, Purl 2 (repeat until end of row) to make 2 X 2 rib stitch

Row 5: Knit all the way across

Row 6: Purl all the way across

Repeat rows 5 and 6 (stockinette stitch) until work measures 5.5(6, 6.5, 7) inches ending in a purl row.

Cast off work: Knit two, slip first stitch over second.  Repeat until the last stitch is on the hook.  Cut wool and pull through the last stitch.


Fold hat in half and sew up side and top seam of the hat.  Here is a good tutorial on how to sew seams in stockinette stitch:

To make the ears, weave a strand of yarn around each top corner of the hat and secure with a bow (see photo below).
