After sharing my Argyle Cowl knitting pattern in December, I received a few emails from my subscribers asking for a headband version. I thought that was a wonderful idea! I got to work and came up with a pattern that I hope is what you guys were looking for! This simple argyle headband knitting pattern is a great way to practice your stranded knitting skills. The colour chart is easy to follow and creates a gorgeous stretchy ear warmer that is perfect for all of your outdoor adventures!

I chose to work with Knit Picks Capretta fingering weight yarn to keep the fabric thin enough that working in a tube wouldn’t make the headband too bulky. I think most people prefer to knit stranded work in the round in order to avoid purling with two colours. Plus, the wrong side of the work (where the floats are), will be hidden inside the tube, creating a prettier end result!

For those of you that are new to stranded knitting, I have embedded a YouTube video with the pattern below that I made for my Buffalo Plaid Beanie Pattern, where I demonstrate how to hold the yarn and switch colours. You can also find the video on the Leelee Knits Youtube Channel.

Argyle Headband Knitting Pattern

Materials:

To make one headband, you will need the following materials

  • Knit Picks Capretta Fingering Weight Yarn:
    • 1/3 Skein (approx. 80 yards) White – Colour A.
    • 1/3 Skein (approx. 80 yards) Adriatic Heather – Colour B.
  • Size 2 (3 mm) 32” circular (for magic loop method), or double pointed knitting needles for knitting in the round.
  • Stitch Marker.
  • Scissors.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge:

30 stitches, 26 rows = 4 Inches in stockinette stitch unblocked.

Measurements:

Length before folding and blocking: 17”.

Width before blocking: 3.75”.

This stretchy headband is made to fit an adult woman with a head circumference of 20-22”.

Notes:

The headband is knit as a tube in the round, and then the cast-on and cast-off ends are seamed together.

When working the stranded stitches, always hold the non-dominant colour to the left, and the dominant colour to the right.  The yarn held to the left will produce a slightly larger stitch than the yarn held to the right; this will ensure the stitches are consistent in size and make the non-dominant colour pop.

I have created a video on stranded knitting to show how I hold the yarn and switch colours.  If you are new to stranded knitting, please watch the video below before you start.

Abbreviations & Special Stitches:

Stockinette Stitch:

Work each round as follows: Knit each stitch from beginning to end of round.

Pattern:

With colour A, cast on 56 stitches (or a multiple of 14 to change width of headband).  Place stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round and join (being careful not to twist the stitches).

Working in stockinette stitch, follow the colour chart below by repeating stitches 1-14 from the beginning to the end of the round.  Colour A is represented by the white squares, and colour B is represented by the teal squares.

Repeat rows 1-16 seven times, (headband will be 17 inches long unfolded).

Finishing:

Cast off, leaving a long tail to seam the ends together.  Weave in and secure any additional ends to the inside of the tube.  Whip stitch the cast-on and cast-off ends together and then wet block the headband to allow the stitches to relax.
